Atrophy - Unwanted Sounds

Atrophy - Unwanted Sounds
Originally Released 2000(?)

This tape I have no idea how I got it, I think someone threw it in with an order I made or something, because I didn't- and still don't- know anything about Atrophy or Torture Music Records. I kinda think I got it from Monorail Trespassing or something way way back? Apparently this is James Kosharek, who ran Torture Music and also recorded under the name Voltage Regulator, and based on what's on the discogs page they were not active for very long. This album is a strange lo-fi spacey beast, part of it sounded exactly like it was takeoff and landing sounds from planes cut into loops, field recordings and swooshing feedback- not especially harsh, just weird juxtapositions and strangeness.

Jason Campbell/Expose Your Eyes - Split

Jason Campbell/Expose Your Eyes - Split
Originally released 1999

The Campbell side of this noise soup is actually just a couple steps away from the HNW that would dominate their later output- it starts abruptly and never lets up until it just as abruptly ends about 30 minutes later! There's a lot going on in here, and it sounds 'played' as opposed to 'allowed to happen' but it's right on the edge. Low tones almost form a kind of subliminal melody underneath it all and higher pitched sounds chirrup and squeal throughout and I liked it- it doesn't have the wild cutup energy of other Campbell recordings from around the same time but it still feels active more or less the whole way through.
Expose Your Eyes have been around since at least 1985 according to their discogs page and even though they've done splits with Government Alpha, Nocturnal Emissions and Smell & Quim (among others!) I don't know a single fucking thing about them! Maybe because I was not that into their half of this split? It's kind of lifeless to my ears and just meanders across 20 minutes of tape and then finally picks up in the last 10. If it was three ten minute tracks I think I would have liked it better, or maybe if the preceding 20 minutes had felt more intentional instead of just like a holding pattern till the end. Anyway here ya go-

Jason Campbell/Zanoisect - Split

Jason Campbell/Zanoisect - Split
Originally released 1999

The Jason Campbell saga continues, this time sharing a split with extremely prolific and long running but little talked about (at least as far as I can tell) noiser Zan Hoffman, here appearing as Zanoisect! Zan Hoffman I am mostly familiar with thanks to tireless weirdo blog Die or D.I.Y.?, a true resource for anyone into hissy cassettes turned into hissy mp3s- like me, obviously! I've heard so much good shit via that blog and they keep their links updated so go back back as far as you dare into the archive.
Anyway Zan Hoffman, what a guy! Follow that discogs link and dive into the many psuedonyms and collaborative efforts and splits and what-have-you that date back to the early eighties and continue up until about 2011- I was worried for a minute that they had died or something but they're still performing, check out their facebook!
Oh no, I forgot to talk about the tape!

Dogproofracoonbubble - This Drinking Water Is Not For Sale

Dogproofracoonbubble - This Drinking Water Is Not For Sale
Originally Released 2001

Can there be such a thing as outsider art in noise? Is there an inside? If there is an outside then Dogproofracoonbubble is there far on the periphery of even that. This cassette maybe isn't as weird or far-reaching as 57 Different Versions Of The Same 5 Children Live In Me but damn I love this stuff. It has a very evocative sound, maybe just for me personally, I don't know. It sounds like you grabbed a cassette out of a crumbling cardboard carton in a dream and woke up with it in your hand.

Hyperdriver/4 Flies On Grey Velvet - Split

Hyperdriver/4 Flies On Grey Velvet - Split
Originally Released 1999

Hyperdriver's label, Beergut Recordings put this tape out, and their side is a thick slab of battered noise whooshing and wapwapwapping with some clean-ish guitar or samples pushing through the fuzz, more wooshing, then overdriven rhythmbox beats with short sequenced bass loops, followed by wooshing! The whole thing has kind of a digital effects feel to it, not like a computer but like the effects built in to like a SP sampler, if that makes sense. Looking at Hyperdriver's discog's page it seems like they're still making music and apparently moved a couple degrees further into the beats and noises world of breakcore/speedcore! 4 Flies On Grey Velvet serves up a 30 minute splatter of harsh loops and chopped up sounds of all kinds- mixer feedback? Mangled tapes? Unearthly voices? Yes yes yes! Jason Campbell of 4FOGV is of course still active as well just look at this! Anyway here is some more old noise you old noise people-

Gasolineman/Prurient - Split

Gasolineman/Prurient - Split
Originally released 2000

This tape has such good art. That's it. Gasolineman is good, Prurient is doin the early 2000's thing they were doin, and the whole thing is like 20 minutes long. It's harsh noise! I don't really have anything to say about it. It's not especially unique or exciting, it's just standard, reliable, early 2000's harsh noise.

Brian T Cox - Fright Night In The House Of Horrors & Swamp Of the Living Dead

Brian T Cox - Fright Night In The House Of Horrors
Brian T Cox - Swamp Of The Living Dead
Originally released 1994

Okay so this is a cheat for sure but it's October 1st and I'm posting this shit! The artwork alone makes it worth it, but I enjoy these tapes for how loose they sound, like Brian just had a mic running through some reverb and whoever came through the kitchen had to get on the mic and go "AH HA HA HA HA" before they could microwave their Hot Pocket or get a glass of Kool Aid. Plus the fact that they aren't split into tracks like the BBC sound effects records, it's a continuous piece on each side, it's almost like what your mom would do if you told her to make a noise album! And then convinced gas stations to sell it!

Jason Campbell/D-503 - Split

Jason Campbell/D-503 - Split
Originally released 2000

Oh boy I have so many splits to go still, here's my split with Jason Campbell, JC does the DD3 harsh cutup noise that was such a huge influence on my forming noisebrain, while I was wandering around in the dark ambient tape-and-computer shadows that I so often return to- my side is dominated by a 24 minute track that's mostly tape pulling and drones followed by a track of an Audiomulch feedback setup that pretty much played itself to tell the truth- but a lot of what I was doing at the time was just setting up systems and seeing what they did. Am I a musician yet??

Dorian Gray - μοuϭα αȹεⲖⲕεⲓ

Dorian Gray - μοuϭα αȹεⲖⲕεⲓ
Originally released 2000

I got this cassette for free from the artist after seeing a listing on the alt.noise newsgroup- which I've decided to just not explain what the fuck a newsgroup or Usenet is cos you have the internet already, just look it up. Anyway I can't find anything about this on discogs or anywhere, all I can find is my own review of the tape from almost twenty years ago so who knows if they ever did anything else, there are almost thirty acts named Dorian Gray and I don't really care enough to dig through all the listings (even though I already mostly did). All I know is they went to UMass in 2000, cos that's what the contact info says, and put out one c30 in an edition of 23, and it's pretty weird! It's one 15 minute track, repeated both sides, with distorted bass rumbling hard panned to one side and bright chiming tuned percussion panned to the other, with what sounds like French movie dialogue towards the end. It's pretty good!

Edwin Perry Manchester - S&S

Edwin Perry Manchester - S&S
Originally released 2014

Since I'm putting everyone else on the proverbial chopping block hereabouts, I figure I might as well stretch my own neck out again, and not even for the last time! This was released about the same time as the SPACE tape I put out, limited to ten copies with handmade packaging and is entirely made from a circuit bent Speak & Spell, recorded onto 4 track. This is sourced off the tape itself and not the 4 track recordings, unlike the Space tape, so it is probably a bit more lofi than that one- when I'm a corpse someone else can dig through all my 4 track recordings to try to unearth whatever hidden gems there may be-- I started doing it but I backed them up on a biometrically locked harddrive and I've since lost my old fingers.

4 Flies On Grey Velvet/The Praying Gods/The Violet Grind - 3 Way Split

4 Flies On Grey Velvet/The Praying Gods/The Violet Grind
Originally released 1999

Back to the splits, I got so many 4FOGV/Jason Campbell splits from 99-02 that it seems completely crazy to me that I cannot find more copies of them online, the only one I can find ever is the JC/Prurient split and whoever ripped it didn't even scan the full artwork! But I have to admit that these tapes had a very outsized influence on my young self and exposed me to way more noise weirdos than I could have possibly hoped, for instance the supremely weird Praying Gods! PG and 4FOGV are both from London Ontario, which meant nothing at all to me back when I first found them on mp3.com, but since I have learned that that city is the home to the Nihilist Spasm Band and has been since 1968 or so, so maybe that is part of what shaped these noisey weirdos? Or maybe they had no idea and London is just a weird place to live. And also Violet Grind, who I know nothing about really, although looking at their discogs page I probably should, they put out stuff on labels I was into at the time even! Ah so many missed opportunities, so many old noise tapes I'll never listen to, so here's another one cast off into the void, in the hopes that it reaches interested ears-

Nuclear Pig Shit - Farm Noise

Nuclear Pig Shit - Farm Noise
Originally Released 1998

Here is another old old Hospital release, this has the scissors logo on it but it says Hospital Recordings instead of Hospital Productions, check out the scans included, also note that I wasn't online when I ripped this and tagged it so I just guessed what year it came out and I was off by a year even though now looking at the inner art it says '98 on it, but anyway I'm too lazy to change it so everyone who can't handle that you'll have to change the tags yourself! ANYWAY this is some low low lo-fi junk noise, clanging crashing and banging, some piano not really played so much as abused, all of it mixed just by dubbing cassettes over each other with a karaoke machine because Megan Griffin HATES GREATLY DISLIKES COMPUTERS! The tracklisting on this is probably not actually correct cos the last 'track' on here is what was on side two, which is just 15 minutes grabbed at random from side one, I debated even including it in the file but I guess it's on the tape so you get it too!

Prurient - Captivity; Dig Through The Wall

Prurient - Captivity; Dig Through The Wall
Originally Released 1999

OO wow a Prurient release that isn't even on Discogs, what a rare and splendid treat! According to the (black on black printed) insert this is HOS31- I think! It's two maxell c90s painted black, with black on black inserts, in cassette cases glued together with a piece of cardboard in the middle, wrapped in a bunch of loose magnetic tape, sewn into a shingle with heavy wire! And if that wasn't dark enough for you then the very first track, which is of course 45 minutes long, is called I HATE MYSELF! It's unremittingly bleak and harsh and loud, which to 20 year old me sounded like the best thing ever but to me now sounds like a big time commitment! I got old I guess, and no longer excited by the prospect of Prurient blasting their genius across my earholes for 180 minutes at a time- or not I guess since I sat through real time dubbing of this monster just so I could show it off to you, my loyal (?) readers (??)! Are you reading this nonsense? Just skip it and listen to this behemoth!

Slipstream - Meal Strips/Prism Tales

Slipstream - Meal Strips/Prism Tales
Recorded Sometime in 2016(?)
Unreleased

Here we have more or less a demo tape by Slipstream, aka Jay Fox of Fargo, who'd previously played out as Braindeer among other names I can't remember off the top of my head- if you ever went to a show in Fargo and there was so much fog machine going on you couldn't see two feet in front of you and all you could hear was rhythmic pulsing drones punctuated occasionally by a cacophony of tinkling music boxes then you were at a Braindeer show! And this tape is more or less like that, maybe a bit less noisey and more like a blurred reflection of dance music, but still moving through the shifting fog.

How To Sleep - How To Sleep

How To Sleep - How To Sleep
Originally Released 2000

And here is the How To Sleep Tape mentioned in the previous post! This was 'made to order' so every tape was different, so I'm the only person who's heard this particular recording up until now unless I forced someone to listen to it with me. This recording is a noise collage with some COPS sounding samples, feedback and synths, kinda spacey to harsh, recorded over a cassette single. Here's the artist's conception of the setup used-

4 Flies On Grey Velvet/Masters Of The Universe - Split

4 Flies On Grey Velvet/Masters Of The Universe - Split
Originally Released 1999

Back when I started making noise and trading tapes, everybody was doing a split with Jason Campbell, aka 4 Flies On Grey Velvet, aka Wallmaster, aka Static 666, etc etc. I did one, Prurient did one, Emil Beaulieau did one, and Masters of the Universe did one too! Masters of The Universe was two people from Lansdale PA, one of which also recorded as Gordon Deathswamp's Glass Of Juice, [math] and How To Sleep, the other who recorded as Street Pole Skinner and I think they were in a different band together besides this one! How did we all have the time for this? Anyway, 4FOGV on this recording are actually kinda dark ambient-ish rather than harsh noise/HNW, and then on the flip MOTU does drum machine and keyboard abstracted pop music?? And I love it??

Dogproofraccoonbubble - 57 Different Versions Of The Same 5 Children Live In Me

Dogproofraccoonbubble - 57 Different Versions Of The Same 5 Children Live In Me
Originally Released 2001

DPRB is someone who found me when I was running a tape label (very badly, sorry everyone!) called Lucha Libre Recordings because they traded Mexican wrestling VHS tapes! Luckily they also made noise and we traded a bunch of stuff back and forth. I have no idea how much gear they had when they were making their recordings but my guess would be not very much at all! Listening to this, knowing when it was made and how lofi, low budget it sounds, I am constantly asking- how how how did they make these sounds? It's beautiful, it's terrifying, it's mournful, it's funny! It's more than two hours long! It's a window into someone's brain!

Prurient - A Simple Mark

Prurient - A Simple Mark
Originally Released 1998

Hey look it's the very first Prurient album! If you want a flac rip of this then track it down and rip it your own damn self, I'm not gonna do it. I am not 100% on the track splitting on the b-side cos the art says five tracks but I hear six and there aren't any silent gaps after the first two tracks but I asked Brandon O'Blivion if I should leave it unindexed and they said "nah" so there ya go!
