Jason Campbell/Expose Your Eyes - Split
Originally released 1999
The Campbell side of this noise soup is actually just a couple steps away from the HNW that would dominate their later output- it starts abruptly and never lets up until it just as abruptly ends about 30 minutes later! There's a lot going on in here, and it sounds 'played' as opposed to 'allowed to happen' but it's right on the edge. Low tones almost form a kind of subliminal melody underneath it all and higher pitched sounds chirrup and squeal throughout and I liked it- it doesn't have the wild cutup energy of other Campbell recordings from around the same time but it still feels active more or less the whole way through.
Expose Your Eyes have been around since at least 1985 according to their discogs page and even though they've done splits with Government Alpha, Nocturnal Emissions and Smell & Quim (among others!) I don't know a single fucking thing about them! Maybe because I was not that into their half of this split? It's kind of lifeless to my ears and just meanders across 20 minutes of tape and then finally picks up in the last 10. If it was three ten minute tracks I think I would have liked it better, or maybe if the preceding 20 minutes had felt more intentional instead of just like a holding pattern till the end. Anyway here ya go-
